Eunjae Lee is an artist working at the intersection of animation and visual art. She holds a BFA in Studio Art with a concentration in Digital Art from NYU Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development, and studied in Experimental Animation at the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts).

Her practice begins with a deep fascination with life. From humans, plants, animals, insects, and food ingredients to fictional beings in pop culture, Lee explores a wide spectrum of life forms—both real and imagined. Through her work, she strives to express the resilience and preciousness of life.

Since 2013, her ongoing series Life and Death has delved into the value of life illuminated through death, the often-overlooked vitality in everyday moments, the evolution of fictional life forms in mass media, and the organic interconnectedness of all living things. These works aim to shed new light on the essence and meaning of life itself.

Her notable works include the animated short Daisy (currently in progress) and About Death (2016). About Death, an art film, received the Best Animated Film Award at the Oregon Independent Film Festival (2017) and the Best Animation Award at the Fine Arts Film Festival in the U.S. (2016). The film was also invited to several prestigious international film festivals, including the Montreal World Film Festival (2016) and the Short Film Corner at the Cannes Film Festival (2017).

In recent years, Lee’s inquiry has expanded from the individual to humanity, and from the natural world to fictional life forms in pop culture. Her animated short Daisy investigates the organic relationship between the consumer and the consumed—how human survival often requires the sacrifice of other life—and seeks alternative ways to approach life, safety, and sustainability.

Through her 21st Century Relationships series, she also explores the vitality and meaning of non-human entities in popular culture: characters from animation and commercial logos, fictional figures from literature and music, and artificial intelligences such as AlphaGo, Siri, and Genie. This ongoing project integrates elements of public art to facilitate audience interaction and proposes new perspectives on the concept of life.

Eunjae Lee actively participates in exhibitions and film festivals worldwide, continuously expanding the boundaries of artistic expression through experimental animation and painting.

특히, 2013년부터 이어온 삶과 죽음 시리즈는 죽음으로 부각되는 생명의 가치, 일상 속에서 지나치는 생명의 힘, 대중문화 속 가상 생명체의 진화, 그리고 생명 간의 유기성을 탐구하는 작품들로 구성됩니다. 이러한 탐구를 통해 그는 생명의 본질과 의미를 재조명하고자 합니다.

대표작으로는 애니메이션 단편 '데이지(작업중)'와 '죽음에 대하여(2016)'가 있습니다. 특히 아트 필름 작품 '죽음에 대하여' 는 2017년 오리건 독립 영화제에서 베스트 애니메이티드 필름상, 미국 파인아트 영화제(2016)에서 최고 애니메이션 작품상을 수상하였습니다. 또한, 북미 최대 규모의 세계적인 영화제 몬트리올 세계 영화제(2016), 칸 페스티벌 숏필름코너(2017) 등 다수의 국제 영화제에서 초청 및 상영된 바 있습니다.

최근 이은재의 탐구는 개인에서 인류로, 자연에서 대중문화 속 가상 생명체로 확장되고 있습니다. 특히, 생명 유지를 위해 다른 생명을 소비해야 하는 인간과 소비되는 생명 간의 관계를 다룬 단편 애니메이션 '데이지'를 통해 생명 간의 유기성을 탐구하고, 인간의 생명과 안전을 위한 새로운 길을 모색하고 있습니다.

또한, 그는 21세기 관계 시리즈를 통해 애니메이션, 상업 로고 속 캐릭터, 소설, 음악 속 가상 인물, 인공지능 같은 대중문화 속 비생명체들의 생명력과 의미를 탐구합니다. 이 프로젝트는 공공 미술과의 접점을 통해 대중과의 상호작용을 이끌며, 새로운 생명성의 개념을 제시하고자 합니다.

이은재는 다양한 전시와 영화제를 통해 활발히 활동하고 있으며, 실험적 애니메이션과 회화를 매체로 삼아 예술적 표현의 경계를 지속적으로 확장해 나가고 있습니다.
